    Sitti, nahirapan sa akting

    Jun Nardo

Maganda ang career ni Sitti this year. Nakapag-perform siya sa abroad at dalawang awards ang nakuha niya sa Aliw Awards this year, ang Most Promising Female Artist at Best Female Performer in Hotels, Music Lounges and Bars.

"Sa awa ng Diyos, salamat. Masaya kasi hanggang ngayon, may natatawag akong career. Marami pa ring gigs at bookings. Tingin ko naman, enjoy ang tao kapag kumakanta ako.

"Before, limited ang audience ko, mga 30s, 40s, older. Ngayon, ang dami na. Across generations na pati bata, estudyante," sagot niya.

Lumalabas man siya sa Ysabella, pasulput-sulpot lang ang role niya.

"Sinubukan ko lang ang akting. Kung may magandang offer, pwedeng full time. Mahirap nga, eh. Puyatan talaga.  Mahirap sa boses.

"Na-experience ko ‘yung 24 hours na gising, tapos may gig kinagabihan. Mahirap. Lifeless nga ako that gig.

    FELIZSitti

    By Ricky T. Gallardo

AFTER three years in the music business, Sitti feels that she is blessed beyond words can ever describe. "More than happiness, I think the overwhelming feeling I have now is more of gratitude, especially since it's almost year-end, a most appropriate time to look back and be thankful for all the good things that happened this year," she enthuses.

No doubt that Sitti still holds on to the title of bossa nova queen, something she did not give to herself, unlike other artists and their publicists who whip up titles just to strengthen their positioning in the market. When the term bossa nova was still alien to most of the mass-based patrons of the local music industry, the strategists at Warner Music Philippines decided to launch a new singer that could represent that musical genre. Sitti's name became associated instantly with bossa nova and the forces of the universe certainly conspired to make her entry into the local music scene a phenomenon.

Most cynics predicted that the bossa nova appeal wouldn't last very long and Sitti, along with the many who took advantage of this new trend, would exit faster than the way they got in. But one can never put a good talent down and Sitti, up to this day, has managed to rise above every challenge and every trial that is directed to bring her down.

"I am very well aware that in the entertainment business, I cannot please everyone. That's why I do not let negative things bother me anymore. If some people do not have good things to say, then I do not have to listen to them, right?" Sitti strikes us as a lady who has more than just a gift of voice.

During this dinner wonderfully set up at the rooftop of a Quezon City building, Sitti shares with us her special plan for this holiday. "I am having a special concert at the courtyard of the church where the world-famous Las Piñas Bamboo Organ is located. Since I started to get really busy, I have been constantly away from home. And I thought that this is a nice way of spreading holiday cheers to the people in Las Piñas."

She continues, "My music has brought me to so many places around the country and to some far away cities in the world. But I have never really had a chance to have a major show in Las Piñas. Sitti grew up in Las Piñas and this is a way of giving back to the place where she had stored many wonderful memories of childhood and adolescence.

On Thursday, December 13, Sitti stages a special concert aptly titled I'll Be Home for Christmas and it will be a sentimental homecoming for the singer as she relives her past through a carefully chosen repertoire.

Sharing the stage with Sitti are the internationally acclaimed Las Piñas Boys Choirs and last year's Philippine Idol singing sensation Jan Nieto. "I am so excited that I will be performing with the boys. It has always been my dream to have a children's choir join in a production number," she exclaims.

The concert will also be Sitti's first major Christmas open-air concert. "I just pray that the December weather cooperates, since this will be like a thanksgiving concert to everyone who has, in one way or the other, been instrumental in making me the kind of artist I am today."

Sitti adds that she and her musical team have chosen songs popularized by the likes of Luther Van dross, Michael Bublé and Johnny Mathis. She will also have an OPM segment and songs about Christmas picked from movies like Sister Act and Rent.

Besides her family and friends, there will be one person in the audience on Thursday who is expected to be all smiles when Sitti goes onstage. Her long-time boyfriend has served as Sitti's inspiration and strength through all these years, starting from the time when she was just one of many lounge singers whose take-home pay was a mere 700 pesos for a night. "He is the love of my life," she declares.

It's been a long climb for Sitti. The good thing is, this girl from Las Piñas knows her priorities and never forgets to look back. As she keeps on reiterating during the course of this interview, "There are so many things to be thankful for."

Sitti finds reduction of gold and platinum marks disappointing

    Kaye Villagomez

Like most artists in the recording industry, Bossa Nova artist Sitti was saddened with the news that the marks for which Gold and Platinum record awards are based have been reduced.

In an interview with the Manila Bulletin at Stone House bar in Quezon City, Sitti disclosed, "It’s sad that we have to lower it down because piracy and downloading have made it more difficult for artists to reach the Gold and Platinum recognition."

Although Sitti’s recording career is still thriving on the sales of her original CDs, she said she share the sentiments of everybody in the industry who felt they had to adjust the numbers to meet certain numbers.

Sitti has released four successful records to date and she said she is blessed the Bossa Nova opened a more stable footing for her in the business. "I’m glad though that despite the endless war being waged against piracy, there are still a lot of people who opt for original CDs," the Ysabela mainstay said.

    Of priorities and a homecoming

Although Sitti is currently seen on the nightly series "Ysabela," she argued acting was more of an experiment for her. "I’m thankful for the opportunity and I’m not closing my doors but music, singing and performing still come first."

She also believes she has had her own series of showbiz kicks after having been linked with Victor Neri, Aiza Seguerra and even Senator Noynoy Aquino. Sitti just laughed all the past ‘showbizy’ write-ups and once and for all explained, "Aiza is a co-star kasi in ‘Ysabella’ then with Sen. Noynoy naman and Victor, they were just seen watching my shows but in truth, they are just fans of Bossa Nova."

Sitti recently won Most Promising Artist recognition at the Aliw Awards. "It’s a beautiful and inspiring experience to win awards. I am thankful and honored. It’s so unfortunate that I was unable to attend the awards night because of a previous commitment but I’d like to thank the Aliw Awards for this honor."

On Dec. 13, Sitti will get to do what she loves best in a homecoming concert called "I’ll Be Home For Christmas." Sitti said it’s titled as such because "I’m doing the show at the Las Piñas Bamboo Organ Church Courtyard Area where her home in south of Manila is nearby. For this concert, Sitti reserved a Christmas repertoire popularized by Lea Salonga, Luther Vandross, Michael Buble and Johnny Mathis interspersed with original Christmas classics written by Ryan Cayabyab. Also in the lineup are soundtracks from "Sister Act," "Home Alone" and "Rent."

Sitti will be joined by the Las Piñas Boys Choir and Philippine Idol finalist Jan Nieto for "I’ll Be Home For Christmas," which is made possible by Warner Music Philippines, Magic 89.9, Crossover 105.1, Pinoy Centric, i-Mag Photography, Joel Salindog Digital Videos, Cravings and Magic Pack Direct Marketing System.

    The year of living scandalously

MANILA, Philippines - There you go. Infamy seems to have become a profession in these parts―and it looks, as we recall the year just past, like a very competitive one.

    *snipped*

    Blame it on the bossa

A word on the local bossa nova trend, which apparently gets its sustenance on cover versions of just about any song that fits the easy-listening nature of this Brazilian music genre: The reason that Sitti became such a big hit was not exactly her voice, but the memories she revived with the songs. But this formula sort of went overboard in Sofia’s double CD, which combined an earlier album, “Bossa Latino Lite” (Ivory) with the follow-up, “In Love with Nova Bossa.” Sofia claimed to have explored new territory (“nova bossa” or new bossa), in which “bossa meets pop, jazz, dance and so on…”

The idea sounded okay, except that the listener was of course bound to ask whether Pinoy bossa nova artists were only as good as covering Jobim and company till kingdom come.

“What would you give yourself this Christmas?”
    By Jen F. Vega
    Saturday, December 23, 2007

‘Tis the season of gift-giving. Oh, how we love Christmas and all its thrills and fancies. Even performers/artists/musicians feel the same way. I had the chance to ask some of the country's women performers this question: If you were to give yourself a gift this Christmas, what would it be? Read on to unwrap their Christmas wish list.

    Sitti Navarro

After a series of sold-out concerts in some key cities of the country, Philippines' bossa nova queen deserves a breather. It has been a good year for Sitti Navarro since she re-introduced Bossa Nova to the music scene. For someone who has been very successful this year as proven by the massive following that she has gained, what Sitti wants for Christmas is... "A ticket to go on a cruise anywhere in the world for a well-deserved vacation," quipped Sitti.

    Re: Sitti Navarro

    Manila Bulletin Online

For a change, Sitti departs from bossa

    By YUGEL LOSORATA

To those who think Sitti can only do bossa, think again for this lady is out to prove that she's a versatile performer and that she cannot be boxed. In fact, Sitti describes her upcoming shows at the Music Museum next month as ‘pop’ — a complete albeit temporary turnaround from her bossa nova image.

With her innate talent and the plus of undergoing a formal vocal training, Siiti logically could shoot for greater heights.

In an interview with the Manila Bulletin last weekend, the 23-year old singing sensation expressed, "I hope to come out with concept albums and write a lot of songs for album consideration. I also want to do a show that’s a ‘complete production’, something like the Beyonce concert with all those dancing and extravagance."

Even with a kind of success other female singers of her type couldn’t seem to achieve, Sitti feels there’s still more to accomplish for her career that has stemmed up after starting the trend that made bossa nova locally popular than ever. She has her own wish list to fulfill and that must have kept her from not stopping aiming for more.

Will this mean she’s open to let go her bossa tag and evolve into another kind of act? Her answer seemed to tell she could go more popish but not in the sense she’d really drop bossa altogether. "I don’t think I can actually depart from the genre. Besides I’d like to still help in making bossa more mainstream."

Sitti is set to show that she is one bossa star and more in her upcoming Valentine offering at the Music Museum in San Juan this February 8 and 9. Entitled "Sitti… So This Is Love", the two-night spectacle will feature her doing a lot of medleys such as movie themes, Walt Disney, bubblegum OPM pop, 70s classics, and many more. Of course, she’d still have a portion showcasing her distinctive style as a local hit performer.

Both shows will start at 8 pm as Sitti is being joined by a separate one-two punch guest tandem for both occasions. Comedienne Marissa Sanchez and former Smokey Mountain original Jeffrey Hidalgo will show up on the first night while impersonator Jon Santos and classy act Richard Poon are scheduled to appear the following day.

Directed by John Vincent Lozano, Sitti promises fans for some on-stage surprises as she sings a wide-range of repertoire, from "When I Fall In Love" to "Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso," to "A Whole New World" and "Dito Sa Puso Ko."

During the interview she sampled singing one she personally picks as favorite, revealing through a capella her soothing voice now extra enhanced by way of a vocal coach.

Sitti not only is careful about her voice, but on her body figure too. She has trimmed down noticeably and got a reason in doing so. "I’ve not been eating rice since the recent Holidays after I decided to slim down for personal gain. I feel more confident with myself having a slim figure."

Asked who among the local divas she looks up to, Sitti namedrops two international caliber acts in Lani Misalucha and Lea Salonga. She praised the former for being classically trained while she couldn’t resist being amazed over the vocal strength of the former Miss Saigon.

On whether bossa nova (its success seen in how recording companies have cashed on CDs containing ‘bossafied’ music genres and on the spurt of bossa acts) will continue its great ride in the music spectrum, not even Sitti thinks highly of the chances. "I think bossa has reached its peak. But I’m glad it has made its impact and I wish more and more people will be drawn to it."

(Tickets to "Sitti… So This Is Love," are available at Music Museum, Ticketworld outlets and selected National Bookstore branches.)

    Re: Sitti Navarro

    Still Sitti-ng pretty
    By Philip Cu-Unjieng
    Monday, January 28, 2008

With all the foreign acts coming to our shores for live performances, it could be easy to forget or ignore our local artists who continue to strive and make our live musical entertainment scene a vibrant and compelling one. One such aritst is Sitti. Ever since she emerged with her Filipino-Bossa Nova act, she has energized both CD Sales and the concert/live gig scene. Even I had doubts on the staying power of such an act that relied exclusively on one music genre; but confounding all observers, Sitti continues to be very much in demand for corporate events, and while other Bossa acts have fallen by the wayside, her winning personality and charm have kept her very much in the spotlight.

February is traditionally a red banner month for live acts, what with the proliferation of Valentine, pre- and post-Valentine shows; and one gem of a concept unfolds on Feb. 8 and 9, 8 p.m. at the Music Museum. The two-night show titled Sitti ...So This Is Love promises to reveal new facets of her talent. Talking to her manager, Garrie Trinidad, he readily admitted that now was the time to venture beyond Bossa, to showcase her range, and stamp the shows with more of her personality. Produced by Fondazione de San Pietro, director John Lozano was challenged to make each night a unique event, and thanks to the theme of Romance in the Movies and the guests lined up for each night, we're assured that each performance will have its  individual flavor.

On Feb. 8, the guests are Marissa Sanchez and Jeffrey Hidalgo, while Feb. 9 has Jon Santos and balladeer Richard Poon. For the first night, Jeffrey and Sitti will be dishing out a Grease medley, talking about Summer Loving, while Marissa will belt out Enough Is Enough with Sitti. With the movie theme prevalent on both nights, it's a cinch that Richard will croon a version of Moon River on Saturday, while Jon promises a spoof of sorts on the bossa craze. A medley of Tagalog songs is in the works, and there's a bossa version of Saving All My Love that will be unveiled. Other movie theme songs, like that from the Cher - Nicholas Cage starrer, Moonstruck, will be included in the songlist. And as Garrie pointed out, Sitti will always mean Bossa and she knows that's what her audience expects, but these shows will signal how she can also be much more than that. Sponsored by PCSO, PAGCOR, GSIS, Shell, CDO and Club Tropicana, tickets are available at Ticketnet outlets.

A performance last Christmas with the Las Piñas Boys Choir, utilizing the legendary bamboo organ and a concert at the Hotel Intercontinental on Feb. 7 with a possible guesting by David Pomeranz  are part of Garrie's grand plan to expand the public's grasp of what Sitti represents musically and endear her to an even wider audience.

For the girl who had a One Note Samba  beat, this is a stretching of her wings that deserves success and recognition.

    Toni Gonzaga & Sitti
Lovely ladies sing songs of love
    By Ricky T. Gallardo

For a change, Sitti and her advisers have decided to mount a pop show instead of the usual bossa nova fare that has become her signature repertoire. "I guess it's about time that people hear something new, and I feel that this show can be a good jump-off point for me to explore new adventures when it comes to my musicality," she explains.

Sitti clarifies that she will definitely have a segment that will feature songs that the public has gotten used to hear her sing. "Syempre hindi pwedeng mawala ang bossa nova," she asserts. Adding that she has picked a few tracks from her latest album under Warner Music including her personal favorite, "My Ever Changing Moods."

Sitti lets us in on some of the songs that have made it to the list for her show next weekend. "I'll do my version of Nat King Cole's ‘When I Fall In Love' and I will also attempt to sing fast OPM hits like Donna Cruz's ‘Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso' and Ogie Alcasid's ‘Dito Sa Puso Ko.'" Whether she'll show her dancing skills or not is something Sitti wouldn't tell us at this time. "I have to practice really hard," she says in jest.

Sitti has invited some guest performers in her show: Richard Poon, Marissa Sanchez, Jeffrey Hidalgo and Jon Santos.

Sitti tries pop at Music Museum

The country’s queen of bossa nova offers some twist in her upcoming two-night show at the Music Museum in San Juan on February 8 and 9. Dubbed “Sitti… So This Is Love,”  the spectacle is seen as an interesting Valentine extravaganza from the trend-setting singing sensation.

And while everyone would expect something that’s all bossa nova, the 23-year-old stage stunner has something more to give: a pop show.

Of course, she’d still have a portion showcasing her distinctive style as a bossa nova performer. She will be singing songs from her latest album under Warner Music called “My Bossa Nova” which includes the song “My Ever Changing Moods.”

Directed by John Vincent Lozano, “Sitti… So This Is Love” brings the best-selling act into singing a wide-range of covers repertoire from Disney’s “A Whole New World” to Ogie Alcasid’s “Dito Sa Puso Ko” to Nat King Cole’s “When I Fall In Love” to Donna Cruz’s “Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso.”

To provide more good singing and some comic relief, Sitti will be joined by a couple of male singers and comic acts. Comedienne Marissa Sanchez and former Smokey Mountain member Jeffrey Hidalgo will show up on February 8 while impersonator Jon Santos and balladeer Richard Poon are scheduled to appear the following night.

Both shows start at 8 p.m.

Sponsoring “Sitti… So This Is Love” are PCSO, Landbank, Pagcor, Club Tropicana, GSIS, Shell, Widescope Entertainment, Business Mirror, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Dream FM 105.7, Love Radio 90.7, and Yes FM 101.1 Tickets are available at Music Museum (721-6726), Ticket World (891-9999) and selected National Bookstore outlets.

Sitti may pre-Valentine concert sa Music Museum

    By: Ria F. Manaois

KAHIT hindi ka  showbiz writer, you won’t find it difficult striking a friendly chat with the Queen of Bossa Nova named Sitti. For she has a ready smile, a warm personality and a special way of making one feels as if she’s an old acquaintance.

This I found out when I got a surprise assignment to interview the good-looking Sitti, who I learned started singing in music lounges. She did this for two years before she tried her hand at Bossa Nova.

“It’s relaxing,” she says of her singing Bossa Nova. “The transition wasn’t hard because it’s not different from singing jazz. Parang pinsan naman ng Bossa Nova ang jazz and you have the freedom (to do what you want).”

Getting the title of Bossa Nova queen, she says, is not important. “I’m happy that  just by singing my favorite relaxing songs, I have “awakened” the nation and prompted other artists to join the bandwagon and come up with their own Bossa Nova songs.”

Hindi takot si Sitti sa kompetisyon.   In fact, she’s proud that her two albums are still in the charts. Her second album titled  My Bossa Nova  includes one of two songs  she personally wrote, A Song for Penny Brown.

“When I wrote that, I had an inspiration from above and a melody. I had to write it (lyrics) down,” says Sitti, who is of Maranao descent.

She’s keen on spreading her wings and making it to the international market. She’s already on the way there. At 23, Sitti has already performed in other countries such as Australia, Malaysia and Guam.

For this Valentine’s Day, Sitti will have a two-day pre-Valentine concert on February 8-9 at the Music Museum titled,  Sitti…So This Is Love.

Be ready to be swept off your feet with a repertoire of timeless love songs from the movies of  past decades.

“My first two concerts at Hyatt and Hard Rock Café were focused on the Bossa Nova albums but this time, my guests and I will also be singing love songs,” says Sitti.

Panauhin sa  Feb. 8 sina  Marissa Sanchez and Jeffrey Hidalgo. Sa Feb.  9 naman ay sina   Jon Santos and Richard Poon.

She didn’t mention if her special someone will be there. No, it is not Senator Noynoy Aquino, as some write-ups suggest, but a non-showbiz guy.

I’m indeed lucky that I was unexpectedly regaled by Sitti with her charm, humbleness  and positive outlook in life.

It’s a rare experience a journalist like me would have a hard time forgetting.

Sitti, ayaw na sa bossa nova?

    Lito T. Manago

KAGABI sinimulan ang 2-nights concert ni Sitti sa Music Museum, ang Sitti...So This Is Love. At marami ang nagulat, dahil sa halip na puro bossa nova music ang binanatan niya ay nagsingit talaga siya ng pop music.

Aba, kinanta ni Sitti ang mga "A Whole New World," "Dito Sa Puso Ko," When I
