The teen star has been busy inspiring young Filipino high school students in his nationwide school tour

conFOR THE past three months, multimedia teen star and Department of Education (DepEd) spokesperson for the youth, Sam Concepcion, may not have been visible on television (especially after his regular show, Super Inggo, went off the air), but that hardly means he's been idle.

On the contrary, Sam has been busy inspiring young Filipino high school students in his "SAMa-SAMa sa Eskwela" nationwide school tour.

Sam, who was named DepEd's ambassador for the youth last year, has visited a total of as many as 30 schools, where he has touched base with more than 100,000 students so far. All in all, the tour aims to visit 50 private and public schools by March, and has been to various points in the country like Pampanga, Laguna, Cebu City, Cagayan De Oro City, and Davao City.

For Sam, there is nothing more rewarding than to see young people in school where they should be and helping them to appreciate the value of education. That, he says, is more lasting than any song he could sing. They'll probably forget a song, but not this. "I am really enjoying it," admits Sam. "I feel so privileged that I get this rare chance to remind, and inspire my fellow youth to not neglect their studies, and their dreams."

    Sam Concepcion: Cyber ethics spokesperson

    By Deni Rose M. Afinidad

There seems no stopping singer-actor Sam Concepcion. First, he won the grand prize in the now-defunct talent show. Next came big breaks in both television and theater, the most popular of which was a lead role in the local version of Disney’s High School Musical. Soon after, he released his first self-titled album, which immediately received a good following among the youth, especially the girls.

In spite of all that, Sam’s success as a recording star is actually in danger. He admits that although his first single, “Even If,” is topping the charts, not so many people are buying the album.

“Like many other artists, I’m also affected by copyright infringement,” he confides. “People copy my songs from the Internet without permission. It’s affecting the sales of my CDs.”

This is why Sam has joined B4USurf, a campaign that aims to promote the importance of cyber ethics, cyber safety, and cyber wellness among educators, parents, and the youth.

Concepcion was chosen to become the model of the campaign as he is the current “Role Model of the Youth,” a title given to him by the Department of Education. As the official spokesperson, Sam was among those who recently launched the program in Makati Shangri-la Hotel, together with top DepEd officials and heads of the Business Software Alliance (BSA), an international, non-profit organization promoting a safe and legal digital world.

“Students like I am are heavy Internet users. We use it for researching, gaming and social networking. It’s therefore a good thing to know the possible dangers we could encounter while we are online,” explains Sam.

The main component of the campaign is the B4USurf Web site (www.b4usurf.org), which is divided into three sections—one for educators, one for parents, and one for the youth with ages 10 to 18. Each section contains materials, resources, and activities covering topics ranging from intellectual property and Internet safety, to the use of software tools in monitoring online activities.

“Being aware of the basics of cyber ethics and cyber safety through the B4USurf Web site will surely contribute to our growth as responsible Internet and computer users,” enthuses the young actor.

ACNielsen estimates that the number of Internet users in the Philippines will reach 24 million this year, mainly because technology has become more accessible and affordable through Internet cafés and low-cost computers. Hence, BSA’s director for Anti-Piracy for Asia, Tarun Sawney, believes that these millions of Filipino Internet users should be given enough information that will not only allow them to maximize their use of the Internet, but will also protect them from risks present in the Web.

“We recognize the massive influence of the Internet today as well as the need for disseminating information on proper Internet usage, cyber ethics, and cyber safety,“ he says. “That’s why we have put up this Web site to make such information available to anyone who needs it, especially parents, educators, and young people.”

According to Sawney, they are committed to look for ways to make the online experience for students, parents, and educators both productive and safe. “We also expect the government to play an increasingly active role in providing Internet education in schools, as the present and future generations will immerse themselves in the digital age,” he adds.

For parents, the Web site can be a helpful tool in protecting their children from threats such as exposure to cyber *** and violence.

“Because parents are usually unknowledgeable about the Internet, they oftentimes are unable to guide their children in ethically using the medium,” says Sawney on the reason why the Web site has a webpage for parents.

For educators, www.b4usurf.org will serve as a helpful resource of syllabuses and guide lesson plans in teaching students about cyber ethics and other related issues.

“We found out that the Internet is a huge resource where most students get their information in researching for all their subjects,” reveals Tommi Svinhufvud, director for information and communications technology of Chinese International School in Hong Kong.

He says that the Internet empowers children because it offers new technologies children can easily learn, like downloading music. “To the children who do this, they feel they’re not hurting Nelly Furtado or Bill Gates because these people are already rich. But it doesn’t mean that because it’s easy, free, and accessible to download songs and software, it’s already right. It’s still stealing, and while they aren’t directly hurting other people, they’re corrupting their own character,” he stresses.

Hence, Tommi encourages teachers like him to be accountable not only in teaching their students how to use the Internet for researching, but also how to use the Internet responsibly. “We should also teach by example,” he points out.

For students, the B4USurf Web site can be a treasure trove of suggestions on how to be decisive in choosing information from the Internet, as well as how to avoid copyright infringement.

“We should start this early in educating ourselves about using the Internet right,” Sam addresses his fellow youth.

“If your school or parents aren’t teaching you about cyber ethics, then go and make your own initiative by visiting the B4USurf Web site. What education can’t reach, the B4USurf Web site can,” adds Svinhufvud.

BSA’s partners in launching the campaign in the Philippines include key information and communications technology industry players like the Intellectual Property Coalition, the Philippine Internet Services Organization, Chikka Asia, Inc., and Bidshot Wireless Services. The campaign also garnered support from the public sector, with the Department of Science and Technology and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines extending their endorsement to the campaign.

Prior to the Philippines, the BSA launched B4USurf in Singapore, China, Malaysia, and Taiwan.

Multimedia star Sam Concepcion at Robinson’s Place

    Friday, March 14, 2008

Sam Concepcion has proven that he's much more than a teen heartthrob with his multi-faceted talent. This 16-year-old is after all a singer, dancer, host and an actor.

In fact his formidable resumé will make even veteran artist, green with envy.

Only last year, he debuted as a solo recording artist with his eponymous album from Universal Records. Sam's debut album has been doing really well not only in the Philippines but internationally. His carrier single, "Even If," made it to No. 1 spot on MegaMixx 101.9 FM, KTKB, in Guam on the week of Jan. 4.  Sam is poised at shooting another music video for this third single from his self-titled debut album under Universal Records.

As a stage actor Sam's credits include "Sino Ka Ba, Jose Ricali" (2002) as the young National Hero,  "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2002), "Song of Mulan" as the Little Lion and narrator (2003) and the most recent, "High School Musical" for which he had received critical acclaim.

He was also last seen in Regal Films' "Shake, Rattle and Roll 9" at the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) and continues to wear his new hat as the Department of Education's (DepEd) youth spokesperson, traveling all over the country to visit private and public schools by March and exhort high school students to excel in school.

Catch Sam Concepcion's mall tour tomorrow, March 15, 2008 (SATURDAY) 3PM at Robinson's Place Cebu Activity Area.

Sam Concepcion: MYX’s youngest ‘favorite new artist’

Multimedia star Sam Concepcion recently bagged the 2008 MYX Music Awards’ Favorite New Artist title. The 15-year old singer is the youngest recipient of the award, to-date, and a runaway winner garnering a majority of MYX viewers’ votes in the said category.

“I am very happy to receive this award and I know I have to work harder. Thanks to the Samsters (Sam’s fans), for their time and resources,” declares Sam.

Songs from his self-titled debut album continue to enjoy warm reception in MYX’s daily countdown. His recent award gives a strong boost to his career as a STAGES/Star Magic talent, as Sam equally loves acting and singing on stage or on television.

Even if he is the youngest MYX Favorite New Artist, Sam has taken on some big responsibilities of his own. With his current role as DepEd’s spokesperson for the youth, Sam has just finished touring some 40 schools nationwide, inspiring young people to excel in school.
