    Pilita throws tantrum in Europe

CAUGHT IN-BETWEEN. Aspiring actress Anna Jebb is in the middle of a war between her mother Carmen and the wrath of Philippine music legend Pilita Corrales.

    By LOUI GALICIA

    ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau

Pilita Corrales threw a tantrum in front of Filipinos in the Netherlands after a fund-raising concert which featured her and performers Richard Merk, Lolita Carbon and Rachel Ann Wolfe, witnesses told ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau.

The Pinoys who were at the scene said Corrales hollered and screamed at the Filipino organizer of the concert, Carmen Jebb, in a fit of rage over her talent fee, which she claims to be unpaid.

"Nagulat na lang ako dahil si Pilita, pino-point niya yung finger niya ke Carmen Jebb. Eh di ba very unprofessional naman 'yon. Hindi lang 'yon. Nung inabot ni Carmen Jebb 'yong papel, hinagis niya pabalik ke Carmen Jebb. Eh kahit naman sino pag ginawa sa ‘yo ‘yon magagalit syempre kaya sumigaw na si Carmen Jebb," eyewitness Connie Miranda said.

(I was surprised because Pilita was already pointing her finger at Carmen Jebb. Isn't that unprofessional. Not only that. When Carmen Jebb handed her the document, she threw it back at Jebb. That's when Jebb got angry and also began shouting.)

"Sumisigaw siya. Ang lakas ng boses niya. Me sinasabi pa siya, liar daw si Carmen Jebb. Marami siyang sinasabi. Hindi lang 'yon. Dahil bago pa mangyari 'yon, nung show, kasi nandun din ako, marami siyang sinasabi sa mga tao na hindi daw magandang organizer si Carmen Jebb dahil liar, manloloko, 'di daw siya binabayaran," Miranda added.

(Corrales was shouting in such a loud voice. She called Jebb a liar among other things. Not only that. Even before the show started she was already bad-mouthing Jebb to a lot of people, calling her a liar, a swindler, and a bad organizer who refused to pay her.)

One of the emcees also noted that Corrales was already edgy backstage during the concert.

"We were waiting for our cue to come on stage, suddenly Pilita Corrales sat beside us and started complaining. I didn't know what she was trying to say. I sat down and listened to her. 'This woman did not pay me. Not a single cent. That's really how she said it. Not a single cent. You know I usually charge 6,000 dollars but since I know it is for charity, I only charged 4,000 but still I did not get paid for it,'" host Ricky Tuazon recounted.

"And then later on she went on to say that she had six tapings, that she would miss six tapings because of this, that she shouldn't have come. And then she talked about the postponement of the concert and she said it was canceled three times. And because of the visas, it was Carmen's fault that these visas were not approved.

"That's what she said. I didn't know how or why or for which technicalities. ‘Yon ang sinabi niya sa akin. 'Di daw na-approve dahil sa kagagawan ni Carmen. Or something like that. I don't know. But she just went on and on that she wasn't paid for this," Tuazon added.

Tuazon, who didn't witness the screaming spree between Corrales and Jebb, already had a strong feeling that something like that would ensue.

"She also warned me that she's going to accost her [Jebb] like she was going to face her with this problem so I sort of felt that something's gonna happen," Tuazon declared.

The "Scent of Home" concert, which was already postponed three times since June 16, was organized in a chaotic rush.

As soon as the performers were granted visas during the last week of October, Jebb decided to push through with the concert in the Netherlands even with only one week to spend on its promotion because she was determined to finish her project for the benefit of a foundation for the deaf and blind children in Bicol.

Jebb called ABS-CBN for an exclusive interview to explain her side.

According to Jebb, she already anticipated that Corrales would make a scene because just the night before, the singer allegedly screamed after the concert in Belgium when she demanded US$4,000 from the organizer there.

But Jebb claims that she had already transferred the talent fee in full to Corrales's bank account as early as May 21.

Jebb provided ABS-CBN a copy of the bank statement showing that the amount of $4,000 or 3,225.81 euros had been transferred to the account of "Pilar Corrales" as downpayment for the June 16 concert in Haarlem.

Jebb said that it all started after the concert when Corrales's husband Carlos Lopez approached her about the sales of the singer's CDs.

Afterward, Corrales called Jebb to talk about the talent fee. Jebb at that time had the bank statement and other papers ready on hand.

"When I showed Pilita the papers… 'Pilita this is the bank account na pinadala namin sa iyo nung May 21…4,000 dollars' …Pilita grabbed the paper and threw it right on my face. I was shocked and she was screaming. 'Liar,' sabi niya sa akin. 'Liar!' And a lot of people was still there. 'You didn't pay me Carmen, you are a liar,'" Jebb said.

Jebb was shocked because she respects Corrales and her husband and they were friends in the Philippines.

"I was turned off. Na-turn off ako. Di ko napigilan 'yong sarili ko. Sinabi ko sa kanya, 'Liar ka rin because you are denying the money. Why would you not accept that you received the 4,000 dollars?'" Jebb said.

"And with her finger, [pointing it] straight [at] my face, parang inaano niya sa mukha ko habang nagsasalita siya, 'You liar.' Dinuduro akong ganyan. Halos masundot na mukha ko," Jebb said.

"'No, you didn't pay me Carmen. No, you didn't pay.' Talagang sumisigaw siya and then she said to me, 'I am going to put you on the newspaper.' I said 'You try it Pilita and I am going to have an interview with TFC.' And then she was walking out of the door and she was screaming and screaming, 'Liar, liar ka, manloloko ka. Maraming galit na Pilipino sa 'yo," Jebb said.

Jebb said that the Pinays who lined up to get Corrales's autograph were all shocked to witness the incident.

"Sabi nila, Ate Carmen nadismaya kami. Ganyan pala si Pilita. Ganyan pala siya mangmata ng tao. I never expected it in my entire life. I organized this concert for her and for the rest of the performing artists, for Lolita Carbon, for Richard Merk. Sila talaga ang star nung gabi. Hindi lang si Pilita. Pero did I get something [of] worth out of it? No, I got a *** on my face. Ang sakit talaga. Ang sakit," Jebb said.

Singer Carbon, interviewed via telephone as she was boarding the plane on her flight back to the Philippines, said that the incident could have been dealt with in a civilized manner but that Corrales acted that way because of her stature.

"Alam mo naman prima donna 'yan eh. Ibig sabihin being the legend as Pilita Corrales, talagang she has her own, she has the right to demand because icon eh. You know naman how an icon [acts]. Minsan ako din ganon din pero I do not do the talking. I have a manager," Carbon said.

Jebb fears that the worse is yet to come from Corrales who she heard plans to get even with her by involving her beauty queen daughter Anne Marie in the issue.

Anne Marie or Anna Jebb (screen name) represented the Philippines in China in July at the Ms. Tourism Queen International pageant and, as per Jebb, is being groomed to be an ABS-CBN contract star.

"Binantaan ni Pilita ang anak ko na ibabagsak daw niya ang anak ko, sisiraan daw niya sa ABS-CBN. Which is pinagmamalaki niya siya daw ang nagpakilala sa ABS-CBN. Wrong, Pilita, wrong. Me manager ang anak ko. Si Becky Aguila ang nagdala ke Anna Jebb sa ABS-CBN. Hindi ikaw, kaya please problema nating dalawa ito. Huwag mong idamay ang anak ko," Jebb said in a message to Corrales.

While waiting for Corrales to speak to the media, Jebb has only one message.

"Pilita, I am not your muchacha. Hindi mo dapat ako pinahiya sa harap ng tao. I told you we can talk in a corner. Nakiusap ako sa asawa mo pero binasura mo ako. I don't, I can't accept it Pilita and I can't forget this in my entire life… I am not an artist. I am not showbiz pero hindi ako busabos, Pilita," Jebb said.

'Scent of Home' concert doomed from the start
    By LOUI GALICIA
    ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau

The "Scent of Home" where Philippine music legend Pilita Corrales lost her temper  concert seemed jinxed from the beginning: it was already postponed three times due to visa problems for the performers, reported ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau.

The concert which starred Pilita Corrales, Richard Merk, Lolita Carbon and the last-minute addition of Rachel Ann Wolfe was originally billed as “An Evening With Pilita.

Tickets were sold out when it was first scheduled for June 16 but because of the postponement and two other later postponements, almost all of the tickets were returned.

The concert was supposed to be held in Belgium, the Netherlands and Paris but was cancelled in Paris because the organizers couldn’t find a venue at the last minute.

"Scent of Home" in the Netherlands was held in the 1,000-seater Philharmonie Theater in Haarlem, but the hall was barely one- third full on November 4.

However, Pinoy luminaries such as Ambassador Romeo Arguelles and dance diva Becky Garcia attended to show their support and didn’t seem to feel the emptiness of the concert hall due to the warm response the performers received from the audience.

Cito Beltran opened the show with the second launch in the Netherlands of Pinoy Global Access Magazine.

The brainchild of Merk’s wife Roni, the magazine is dubbed as the “magazine for overseas Filipinos.”

Beltran, the Merks and Wolfe first launched the magazine at the luncheon earlier that day at Arguelles’ residence in Wassenaar.

Wolfe sang three songs including her own composition “Kahit Di Ako” which she claims she  composed while in the laundry room in her house in New Jersey and is included in her brand-new album “Cool.”

For the small number of Pinoys who watched the concert, the evening became memorable during the performance of Lolita Carbon who sang four songs from way back her days as vocalist of “Asin.”

People just sang, swayed their hands and even danced as Carbon belted out the songs that the Pinoys, regardless of age, knew by heart.

In fact, a lot of younger Pinoys came here to watch Carbon.

“Sayang kokonti ang tao pero syempre nagpunta kami ng grupo dahil kay Lolita. Sayang, dapat sana yung buong Asin. Kay Lolita kami pumunta syempre. Kaming mga kabataan paborito siya. Magaling siyang maggitara at hanggang ngayon tintugtog pa din namin ang kanyang mga kinanta,” Lito Mendoza said.

(Too bad not many people came to watch the show. Our group watched it because of Lolita. The whole band Asin should have been there. Lolita is a favorite of young people like us. She plays the guitar really well and until now we play her songs.

“Sayang nga ho. Kokonti ang mga tao pero da best ang nagcoconcert lalo na yung Asin,” Jerome Kuypers, another Carbon fan said.

    Queen of songs

For her part, despite her reported tantrum after the concert, Corrales proved that she’s still the keeper of the crown as Asia’s queen of songs, impressing the audience, especially the Dutch spectators.

Even at her present age of 68, Corrales continued to wow the audience that night with her back-bending moves, gracious style, one-of-a-kind voice, elegance and simply her beauty.

When she went down the stage to sing for the audience, the Pinays just threw themselves in front of her, dancing with her and taking photos at every single opportunity and just kept on uttering, “Pilita, you are so beautiful.”

Indeed Corrales mesmerized her audience, living up to her reputation as the living legend singing five songs that left the audience asking for more.

As the last performer of the evening, Merk also showed the audience the true royalty that he is, being the Philippines’ Prince of Jazz.

Unfortunately, Merk only sang two songs as his minus one suffered a technical setback but his two performances were very entertaining as he injected some sense of humor to his moves, most of the time swaying and back bending a la Pilita.

The evening’s savior though is Holland’s Pinay diva Nhelly dela Rosa who rose to fame in Europe when she won the 1992 Soundmix Show  which is a talent search in Europe.

Dela Rosa went onstage as if to give the concert a fitting postscript, without any talent fee but nonetheless delivering her best performance, as she always does, leaving the audience spellbound with her trademark “We Are The World” rendition which she sang in different voices.

The concert ended without a finale from the stars, an ominous twist considering what later happened between Corrales and the concert's producer.

"Scent of Home" was marred by an alleged shouting match between Corrales and the concert's Filipina producer, Carmen Jebb. Corrales supposedly lost her temper and accused the latter of not paying her talent fee.

Jebb has denied the accusation in an interview with the ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau. See related article here (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=99161).

Even if the "Scent of Home" failed at the box office because the organizer was left saddled with a 4,500 euro bill (288,000 pesos) for the concert hall, there’s no reason for the Pinoys in Europe to stop wishing for more shows featuring Filipino artists; if only for the simple reason of finding an occasional cure to their homesickness and constant longing to get a whiff of home.

    Pilita in Jakarta

    By Bayani San Diego Jr.
    Inquirer

Last updated 08:11pm (Mla time) 12/12/2007

MANILA, Philippines―Pilita Corrales, the Filipino judge for “Asian Idol,” has arrived in Jakarta, where the first-ever regional version of the phenomenal reality talent search on worldwide television is ongoing.

This was relayed to Inquirer Entertainment via SMS on Tuesday from the Indonesian capital by Belay Chavez, who is escorting Philippine bet Mau Marcelo for the management company Artist House.

The “Asian Idol” finals will be aired 8-10 p.m. Dec. 15 and 9 p.m.-12 midnight Dec. 16, on RCTI―described by Marcelo as the “No. 1 TV station in Indonesia”―which is mounting the show with Fremantle Media, franchise holder. Locally, ABC 5 is airing the whole competition live via satellite.

On Saturday, Marcelo and the five other contenders―from Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, India and Singapore―met with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Chavez said Yudhoyono, whose entire Cabinet and family were present, sang his own composition, “Let’s Save Our Planet” and gave the Idols a copy of his CD.

Yudhoyono then asked the Idols to each render a song. Said Chavez, “Mau wasn’t feeling well, but she belted out Whitney Houston’s ‘Saving All My Love for You.’”

That same night, the “Road to Asian Idol” TV special was launched.

    Thoroughly prepared

On Thursday, before leaving Manila, Marcelo told Inquirer Entertainment that she was thoroughly prepared for the tilt. She had rehearsed her competition pieces, “Ako ang Nagwagi” and “Reach” with stage director Freddie Santos and voice coach Zebedee Zuñiga. The musical arrangements arrived by e-mail two days before. (The contestants are expected to sing in English and in their native languages.)

Marcelo relayed her hectic Jakarta schedule to Inquirer via a text message on Saturday, which she ended in Bahasa: “Terima kasih. That’s thank you.”

The sexiest Diva na gyod kono si Pilita
    Ni Kriss Relatado
    Saturday, January 26, 2008

O kaming tanan dili puedeng mokaon og halang, hasta mi, way mga kaon."

Anyway, basta nakapadayon gyod ang show, pero mi-adlib gyod si Pilita pag-ingon, "the next time nga mag-produce mo, og show, klaroha tawon ang sounds, palihog." Maayo gani kay nagpadayon ang show nga way hasol, ug ang naghuot nga mga sosyal nga audience [lahi gyod ang crowd nilang Pilita og Dulce, no?], nahimuot kaayo sa show, bisa'g pangutan-on pa ninyo sila's Rep. Nerissa Soon Ruiz, Madame Elisa Torres [reigning Emperatriz sa Qouta Club], Annabelle Rama ug uban pa.

That is very true, mitan-aw si Annabelle Rama, ug gi-acknowledge siya ni Pilita nga nagkanayon, "allow me to acknowledge Annabelle Rama, the husband of Eddie Gutierrez who's the father of my son Monching.."

Paghuman og kanta ni Dulce, miggawas si Pilita ug miingon na sad siya, "Oh, I'm so proud to be a Cebuana after hearing Dulce."  Kamo, kun makadungog mong Dulce nga mokanta, dili mo proud nga Cebuano mo? Ako proud kaayo kong Cebuana ko, kun makadungog kong Dulce nga mokanta. Dulce, the new Asia's Queen of Songs."

    Re: Pilita Corrales

    Golden Girls
    FUNFARE By Ricky Lo
    Sunday, February 3, 2008

Before the mega divas, the super divas, the pop divas, the sentimental divas and the diva-divahans, there were Pilita Corrales, the eternal Asia's Queen of Song, and the sultry Carmen Soriano, and the sexy-comic Carmen Pateña (Shirley Bassey of the Philippines), the so-called torch singers who lit up the soda fountains and the classy nightclubs (Bayside, among them) in the late '50s, and the TV screen in the '60s, Plattersville in the '70s, and so on and so forth. They are the true and the real and the authentic divas, tested by time and trends.

They are the Golden Girls, survivors of the avalanche of singers (not many of whom can hold even a little candle to them), and colorful and dramatic, if tragic, marriages and love affairs.

Actually, they don't need any introduction. It's better to know them by playing and replaying their albums. Or, if you are 20 and below and you go for the "noisy" kind of Generation X, Y and Z music, you can ask your moms and your grandmoms, and they will gladly open their "lumang album" for you and reveal much more than what you perhaps care to hear.

Or you can tag along with the seniors in the family to the Golden Divas concert featuring the three icons together for the first time, on March 7 and 8 at the Music Museum, and listen to (their) music when music was music.

Meanwhile, lend an ear to the Golden Girls (sorry, their ages will remain "confidential") as they talk about yesteryear and what they did for love.

Was the rivalry for real? How do you feel when you look back at it?

Carmen S.: Let me set a few things straight. It was part of showbiz. I must admit that there was some little truth to it but not to the extent that people made it out to be. You can't avoid having a rivalry when you are in the same profession. You don't take it personally, though; it's just friendly competition.

Pilita: At that time, kasi siempre there was my TV show, An Evening with Pilita, and her (Carmen Soriano's) show, Carmen on Camera. I guess, there was really no rivalry at all because I was so different from her. She became very popular also. She starred in movies, pero ako naman, pa-guesting-guesting lang. I've done shows with Carmen (Soriano) but not that many with Carmen (Pateña) because she was in the States. Afterward, Carmen (Soriano) also left for the States, so I was the only one left here doing shows. There was nothing personal at all between Carmen (Soriano) and me.

Carmen S.: Yes, Pilita is right. I won't say that there was any real rivalry. Pilita has always been at the top. Alam mo naman noong araw, she was beautiful, as she still is, and she sang so beautifully, as she still does. At kapag mestiza ka, you were a hit.

But you are just as beautiful and as talented.

Carmen S. (Laughing): Well, I don't know if I am beautiful or not because it's only the public who can tell. But I feel that I am a little bit. Hehehehehe! There was never any animosity between Pilita and me. She's very friendly while I'm a bit shy. In this business, your PR should be very good and maybe that was my disadvantage.

But there was no such "rivalry" between you and Carmen Pateña, was there?

Carmen S.: None. It was more between her and Merci Molina. ‘Yung sa amin ni Pilita, it was more like the rivalry between Gloria Romero and Nida Blanca, and between Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos.

Pilita: There was none.

Carmen P.: There was no rivalry between Carmen and me, or between Pilita and me. You know why? They were ahead of me. I came into the scene in the '60s, with Merci Molina and Norma Ledesma...mga ka-edad ko.

Legendary singers like the three of you have very colorful but very sad love lives, ‘no? You all come from broken marriages.

Carmen S.: I'm a widow. I'm Carmen Soriano-Dabao. My late husband, Robert Dabao, was a doctor based in the States. We were distant cousins; we grew up in the same hometown. But we learned that we were relatives only much later. You know, some people are lucky to find their right mates but others, like me, are not as lucky. I thought I found Mr. Right but our relationship didn't last long. He was Lloyd Samartino Sr., the father of my son Lloyd. I was married to him. I met Robert Dabao after Lloyd Sr. died.

Pilita: My first marriage was to the father of Jackie, Gonzalo Blanco. The second is with Carlos (Lopez, a Spanish who owns and manages a fine-dining restaurant in Sydney), my current husband. I lived with Amado (del Paraguay) for several years but we were not married.

Carmen P.: I have two broken marriages. The first was to a Thai businessman engaged in shipping and rice production; the Philippines even imported rice from him. I didn't have a child by him; I don't have a child. We were divorced; he's a widower now. We still get in touch. He wants me back daw, but I told him, "Too late." I'm still married to Dr. Adolfo "Dolf" Ayuyao who is based in New York where we lived for 25 years. The condo we were living in was located near the Twin Towers and when the Towers were bombed in 9/11, nayanig ang buong building namin.

But there were some other men in-between, right? (The late actors Amado Cortez and Eddie Rodriguez in the case of Carmen Soriano; and, in Pilita's, the late Efren Reyes and Eddie Gutierrez, father of her son Ramon Christopher.)

Carmen S.: You know, I'm not the type who goes for "affairs." If a man is only after a fling, sorry but I'm not for it. I want serious relationships, kaya mahirap akong ligawan; masyado akong maarte. Ligaw-Filipino ang type ko - you know, give me time to know you better. Even now, I don't go out with anyone; it's been a while since I had a man.

Pilita: I have only two children and seven grandchildren. Am I the heart-over-head type of a woman? Yes, I am. When I'm in love, talagang todo-todo, walang preno. That's why when I fall, I fall flat on my face.

Oh? How many times have you fallen flat on your face?

Pilita: I would say...twice? But I am the type who springs back fast and easily. I try to get up the next day no matter how much it hurts. I think that's what singing does to me. It helps me bring out all my emotions - the hurt and the anger. Singing eases the pain considerably, because you bring it out in the lyrics, in the words, in the melody.

Speaking of "falling flat on (my) face," have you recovered from that fall in Sacramento during a concert two years ago?

Pilita: Oh, that one. I fell not only on my face but also on my back, on my shoulder, on all parts of my body! There was no harang on the stage and I walked right off it while I was singing. I fell from a height of about 10 feet, and I was in high-heels! I was X-rayed and examined and fortunately, I didn't suffer any broken bones. But I had to undergo therapy here.

Your classic signature "bending backward," is it a gimmick?

Pilita: No, it's not. Many people don't know that I cannot reach a high note if I don't do that. That's the only way. The bending backward opens up my lungs. If it were a gimmick, mahirap na gimik ‘yon; masakit sa katawan.

Back to the question of "other loves," what about you, Carmen (Pateña)?

Carmen P.: Mas marami silang lalake kaysa sa akin. Hehehehehe! Ako, konti lang. Ay naku, laking-Bible ako because of my father would always remind me, "Anak, ang mabuting pangalan ay malaking kayamanan." When I told him, "Pa, somebody is courting me," he would say, "But don't give him your body, ha, anak." I used my head, not my heart. ‘Yan nga si Vic del Rosario (Viva Group of Companies big boss), naging nobyo ko ‘yan, ano ka? He was one of the owners noon of Vicor with which I was under contract.

What happened to you and Dolf?

Carmen P.: Nahuli ko siyang nangangaliwa; I caught him...well, not naman in the act. I told him, "Ako hindi nangangaliwa, ikaw pa!" We were having such a good life until that happened. I was vacationing here and that was when he had an affair with somebody; nasingitan ako ng nurse na ‘yon. When I confronted him, he said, "Eh, siya ang lumalapit, di tukain!" I cursed him, "*** ka pala eh, bakit mo tinuka?" I also confronted the nurse, on the phone. I told her, "I know who you are. If you call again, I will kill you." She didn't call again.

    So you are loveless now...

Carmen S.:...yes, but not lonely. You know, love comes in the most strange situations. I don't look for it; it just comes. Sabi nga ng isang song, love comes from the most unexpected places.

Pilita: I am happy with my love life. During our pictorial, we were kidding one another.

But with my family and relatives around me, I am full of love. So, I'm not loveless; man-less lang. I'm happy with my life now.

What do you consider your most memorable romance, your greatest love?

Carmen S.: Hmmmm.... I would say that my happiest moment was when I gave birth to Lloyd. My marriage to his dad was short-lived; we were both very young. I was only 19.

Pilita: Let me see...I lived with Jackie's father less than a year. The years I spent with Amado were very painful and very tragic. I am happiest now. Yes, Carlos is my greatest love. You know why? Because he has everything that I've been looking for in a man. He wants to be with me 24 hours a day, and vice-versa. He's one man who doesn't stop me from doing anything. If I want to go to a concert, I go. He gives me all the love and attention and all the care that I've been longing for all this time.

Of course, both of you came from a colorful past.

Pilita: Yes. He has been divorced twice.

(To Carmen Soriano) You were romantically linked to former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos. Is it okay for you to talk about it?

Carmen S.: Oh, sure! No, it was not true, and neither was the rumor that (former First Lady) Imelda Marcos was sore at me. No, there was never any animosity between us. No, it's not true that she threw acid at my face. The rumor got so bad that when I was in the States, I was interviewed by UPI (United Press International) about it. In fairness to Imelda, it never happened."

How do you think did that rumor start?

Carmen S.: You know, I was always asked to sing in various affairs and it so happened that oftentimes Marcos was there. When I sang at an Iglesia ni Kristo event or a Jaycees event, the First Couple would be there. Sometimes, the guests would ask Marcos to sing with me and people must have, you know, made conclusions from there.

What was Marcos' favorite song, the one he always requested you to sing?

Carmen S.: The Ilocano song Ti Ayat Ti May Sa a Lakay.

There was also a rumor that you had a child by Marcos.

Carmen S.: Of course, wala! If there was really something between us, it was nothing to be ashamed of. I have had a life that, well, I am not really very proud of but...you know, he was the President, so why would I not say it was true if it was true? No, it wasn't true. If he was ever interested in me, I didn't feel it, I didn't know about it.

What's the biggest thing that you did for love?

Carmen S.: You know, I'm the typical Filipina; I'm a follower. I put my man where he should be.

Pilita: Suffer extreme pain for the love of a man.

Carmen P.: I gave up singing for three years. That was when I got married to the Thai.

(To Carmen Soriano) You said you are "a follower." Are you submissive?

Carmen S.: Not really, although some people think I am. They misread my "submissiveness" for weakness. I like to be catered to; I love the trappings of courtship, with the man taking care of the woman. That comes with sacrifices. You can't tell a man, "If you do this to me, I'll also do it to you." No, you can't do that; you shouldn't do that. Wala namang masamang lalake, eh. When you have a relationship, you have to work hard at it and it takes a lot of sacrifices. Now, if he, despite all my efforts, doesn't take care of our relationship, then I make a decision.

    No regrets?

    Carmen S.: No regrets.

Pilita: Regrets? Why should I have?

Carmen P.: No regrets. I never let my heart rule my head; I don't put emotion above reason. The first time I fell in love was with a doctor...Dr. Lou Glekas. I was 21 then. I met him in Okinawa; I was with my mom. She gave me her blessing. She said, "Go ahead." Lou and I dated but we never, never went beyond, you know. Would you believe that? Then, we broke up.

And how did you meet the Thai?

Carmen P.: I was nursing a broken heart. I was having a singing stint in Thailand when I met the man who would be my first husband. He was introduced to me by a friend who had her own Thai boyfriend. He was seated in a dark corner, listening to me sing. My amiga pointed him out to me. I could hardly make him out dahil madilim nga. Nang makita ko sa liwanag, aba, guwapo! After we were introduced, he asked my mom, "Can I take your daughter out?" My mom said, "Yes, but be home before 12 midnight." To make a long story short, we got married.

And what happened to your marriage?

Carmen P.: I guess it was my fault. He was a good man but he was jealous and possessive. I was fed up with his jealousy and his tantrums. He didn't want me to sing. He put up a shop/store for me in Bangkok para lang ako malibang. It didn't work, so I went back to singing. He would tag along and got insecure when he saw me in a sexy dress. Bakit ko daw dini-display ang katawan ko. I told him, "Excuse me, I'm a singer and I should look like a million dollars!" Hindi siya kumikibo, then we would fight again. The worst happened when we were in Malaysia. He got jealous again so in a huff I took off my wedding ring and threw it at him. Then, you know what I did? It was a black gown at gustung-gusto rin ‘yon ni Madame Imelda Marcos. Lace ang gown na ‘yon."

Wow, sayang naman! Bayad ba ang gown na ‘yon?

Carmen P.: Oo naman. Ask Ben Farrales. Anyway, my husband told me, "If I don't see that ring around your finger tomorrow morning, goodbye." It wasn't goodbye. We went back home to Bangkok pa. He invited me to dinner but I told him bluntly, "Honey, I'm leaving you; I'm going back to the Philippines tomorrow." I packed all my things in two maletas. Our maids wished me well, "Ma'am, take care of yourself." He even followed me to Manila, begging, "Come home, please!" I said no. I was tired of that kind of life. I was miserable. Kahit pala nakahiga ka sa salapi, it won't make you happy. I realized that money is not everything; it can't buy you happiness.

Then, off you went to New York where you met Dolf?

Carmen P.: That was in 1978. But before that, I had another boyfriend but he's too insignificant to be mentioned, thank you.

What do you consider your greatest performance as a singer?

Carmen S.: I think this show with Carmen and Pilita. They are two great performers.

Pilita: I try to make every performance the greatest.

Carmen P.: Performing before dignitaries, including King Hussein (bin Talal of Jordan), who came for a visit. I also performed for former US Pres. Gerald Ford.

What's the best lesson that you learned in life?

Carmen S.: Never look back. If you do, you will always be comparing the past and the present. I've fallen down so many times, but I managed to get back on my feet. My motto in life is the Golden Rule - Don't do unto others what you don't want others to do unto you.

Pilita: I learn from everything that happens every day. We never stop learning. I thank The Lord for every new day...that He allows me to be still here, singing, and to be happy at this time of my life.

Carmen P.: Huwag kang maiinggit; don't envy others. I got that lesson from my father. He told me, "You have what you have and be happy with it."

If you were to live life all over again, would you change anything?

Carmen S.: Maybe a few but not everything. But nothing in my love life. But whatever happened in my life, my greatest joy is that I have come to terms with The Lord.

Pilita: Would I change anything? Yes, my age! Hahahahaha! I want to be 18 again. Ang saya! You know, falling in love all the time, and all those suitors offering me everything, including a Mercedes Benz na hindi ko tinanggap.

Carmen P.: Yeah. ‘Yung mga away-away sa boyfriend o asawa. One time, I fought with my boyfriend and I shot him. He is the insignificant person whose name doesn't deserve to be mentioned. He turned his back and I shouted at him, "Huwag kang tumalikod; hindi ka si Dr. Jose Rizal." It's a good thing I was not a sharpshooter. Hindi siya tinamaan. He owned the gun.

How do you want to be remembered?

Carmen S.: That I am a good person...that I have not harmed or put anyone down.

Pilita: A singer who couldn't sing without bending backward. Hahahaha! Seriously now, I want people to remember me as a person who's always happy

Carmen P.: For being what I am - a charitable person. You know, I am the type who has a soft spot for other people.

If you were a song, what would you be?

Carmen S.: It's a song that a woman should not sing and I even recorded it. It's called I Am I Said (by Trini Lopez). It's a man's song but it's a fitting song for me.

Pilita: A Million Thanks To You (composed by George Sison). I want to thank everybody who has been a part of my life and career. I want to say a million thanks to them for everything. I want to say, "A million thanks to you, my Lord, for letting me still do what I love doing."

Carmen P.: Yes, If I Never Sing Another Song (by Don Cornell). Beautiful song, very meaningful. (Proceeds to sing)... If I never sing another song or take another bow, I would get by but I don't know how... But, of course, I will get by, and I know how.

    Golden Divas, "may asim pa"

Niya pa, "I was busy handling my affairs."

Tsika pa niya, pipila ka buwan pa lamang ang milabay human siya nahibalik sa nasud ug niya pa, she's staying for good. Pwes, perte niyang lipaya dihang nakahunahuna ang Viva Concert and Events nga magmugna og show nga mag-uban silang tulo.

EXersise and diet ra ang katapat. Dugang pa niya never siya nga mipailawom sa derma procedures.

The show's title is "Golden Divas" mismo nga ubos unya sa direksyon ni Al Quinn.

The Greatest Performance of My Life, New York, New York at Diamonds Are Forever.

I will Survive, This is My Life, I Got To Be Me, You Don’t Own Me.

    MST HOME

    Golden Divas

Three superstars of the local music scene gather for the first time in one grand show dubbed as Golden Divas at the Music Museum for a weekend of nostalgia as only they can deliver on March 7 and 8, 8 p.m.

Let Pilita Corrales, Carmen Pateña and Carmen Soriano take you back to the glorious ’60s and ’70s as they render the songs that made them icons and secured for them a permanent spot in the music industry.

Pilita, Asia’s Queen of Song, will render her unforgettable signature song, “A Million Thanks To You,” complete with that famous back-breaking stance. She will prove that she still has what it takes to capture audiences with her unique performing style.

Carmen Pateña, whose singing career, like Pilita’s, covers international venues, will make audiences remember the good old days when she was dubbed the “Shirley Bassey of the Philippines.” She is expected to bring back memories with such songs as “Wonderful Dream,” “The World’s Greatest Clown,” “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Ballad of a Sad Young Man” and others.

Carmen Soriano, she with the face that has romanced the screen with many a dashing leading man, will show music lovers she still has what it takes to keep them asking for more. She will render her signature songs, “Ang Tangi Kong Pag-Ibig,” “Bluebird,” “Bulung-Bulungan,” “Dahil sa Isang Bulaklak,” “Dalagang Pilipina” and others.

The golden divas will not stick to their usual formula, though. They will do something even their fans haven’t seen them do before. They will add a touch of modernity to their repertoire by spicing up their act with the Madonna and Britney Spears treatment.

The Golden Divas promises to be a blast, not just for those who remember the ’60s and ’70s, but for today’s generation, who enjoy Madonna and Britney’s moves and grooves.

The series of shows is produced by Viva Concert and Events and directed by Al Quinn.

Golden Divas dress up for a fashion showdown

AS fashion designer for the Golden Divas, Albert Figueras has his work cut out for him.

Albert is in charge of creating the wardrobe for the show’s three headliners, Pilita Corrales, Carmen Pateña and Carmen Soriano. It’s not an easy task, deciding what style fits the individual performer.

Will it be a sultry terno for Pilita, a sensuous flowing gown for La Pateña or flashy number for Carmen  Soriano?

Albert isn’t telling, but the audience can look forward to a fashion showdown on stage.

    Hot 'n Spicy

    * * *

First time magkakasama sa isang concert nina Pilita at dalawang Carmen, kaya maituturing itong affair to remember.
