    I’ll Take Care of You

For more light, contemporary sounds of the romantic variety, you might want to check out I’ll Take Care of You, crooner Richard Poon’s solo debut. He played the guitar and sang with the sweet tenor in the pop group U-Turn. As you can see, he has now switched his attention to music for the older, sentimental set.

I’ll Take Care of You combines standards, Moon River, Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off and the title cut, Manila Sound, Valera’s Kahit Maputi Na ang Buhok Ko, new originals composed by Richard himself, Naaalala and Goodbye. There is one current favorite, which is just as romantic as the oldies. This is Way Back into Love the hit theme from the movie Music and Lyrics which features Richard on the guitar.

    Swing with Poon

Richard Poon finally takes his turn to stardom via his debut album, I’ll Take Care of You.

Cornerstone Talent Management Center produced the album, which is being distributed by MCA Music.

He said he waited long enough for something like this to happen to him. He is, after all, an avid fan of Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart and Tony Bennet, and these are the artists he tries to emulate.

Unlike singers who do covers, Richard didn’t stick to just a particular musical era. He made it a point to reach out to the younger set of listeners by including contemporary hits arranged to his “Fresh Old-School Music.” The well-balanced repertoire in the CD will surely broaden his fan base. It’s a complete entertainment package that the matured crowd and his young audience would love to play over and over. “I’ll Take Care Of You” CD was recently launched in ASAP on ABS-CBN.

Considered a veteran of live entertainment, Richard surfaced in the industry as a guitarist and lead singer of an acoustic band.

He easily stood out from the many acoustic players for his good looks and rich velvet smooth vocals. His management team at Cornerstone Talent Management Center believes that Richard is indeed destined to be a big star based on the impact he made when he performed in the recently concluded 2007 Miss Earth beauty pageant. He captivated both the ladies and gentlemen in the audience with a string of romantic songs.

Born and raised in the Philippines, he inherited his singing skills from his mother who is a big star in Taiwan up to the present. Another field in which he has established a good reputation is in the culinary arts. He specializes in Oriental food available in his Little Poon restaurant.

Richard Poon embarks on a mall tour to serenade his fans with special tracks from his debut album beginning tomorrow at SM The Block, on Feb. 17 at Shangri-La Mall, on Feb. 21 at Trinoma with OPM Soul Child Julianne, and on Feb. 29 at SM Megamall.

A stellar attraction at Eastwood Central Plaza since he went solo, Richard Poon is slated to do a special show at the venue on Feb. 1 to 7, 8 p.m. an effort supported by Magic 89.9.

    Two sides of ‘smooth’
    By Philip Cu-Unjieng
    Friday, February 1, 2008

When it comes to contemporary music which does wonders for being "food for the soul" and can soothe, relax or accompany an evening cocktail, there are several ways of "skinning the cat." One obvious option is to go back to the music of yesteryear, and come up trumps by listening to a crooner. And in the tradition of such artists as Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr., Michael Bublé and Martin Nievera, we have the new CD of Richard Poon. The other option is to go to the bands of today, and find those songs that exemplify their "softer side." And this, our other CD accomplishes by highlighting its acoustic tracks.

The Best of AKA (Almost Kinda Acoustic) - Various Artists (Warner Music). These compilations of Warner have taken a life of their own, showcasing a number of the label's better artists. While there are ready fans for the acoustic versions of Click Five's Jenny and the Paramore track, I welcome a compilation that will make listeners aware of such artists as Paolo Nutini, Regina Spektor and Damien Rice. Nutini's Last Request is one of my best songs of 2007, a great example of gravely-voiced blue-eyed soul. Some gems from years back, like Alana Davis' 32 Flavors and Everything But the Girl's Driving are also included, and this speaks well of how the label is ready to pull out materials from over a decade ago, as long as they fit in the CD's concept. While also favorites of countless many, Edwin McCain's I'll Be and Stephen Speaks' Passenger Seat are also on the CD; I just have a personal thing about these two songs as they were covered by just about every live band doing the circuit here in Manila some four years ago, but that's just me.

I'll Take Care of You - Richard Poon (Cornerstone Management/MCA Music). The former lead vocalist and guitarist for the acoustic band U-Turn, Richard Poon gets something of an image makeover with this new career direction. Dressed in tuxedo and with impeccably coifed hairstyle, Poon is throwing his (top) hat in the ring to be this year's romantic crooner and balladeer. Starting off with the title track, I'll Take Care of You, and with such selections as Moon River (as popularized by Andy Williams in the '60s), one knows that Richard is firmly placing his career in the hands of those out there who want their music schmaltzy and sentimental. His grand album launch is set  today at the Central Plaza of Eastwood City and it's no coincidence that this is the month of hearts and romance. When the tracks change tempo, it's with a languid bossa beat. So this is prescient niche music, as Richard and his management are fully aware of how the appeal of this kind of music is timeless and linked to a spending crowd.

    Richard Poon Rising
    By MCA Universal
    February 02, 2008

Though it may have become the norm for many an artist aiming to make it big in the local, music scene to simply accede and conform to prevailing musical trends and fads, there are still a few who admiringly dare to be different, taking themselves to task by choosing to take the road less traveled, aspiring for glory on their own terms.

Among them is young, up and coming singer Richard Poon who is fast making his mark even as he continues to steer away from doing usual pop fare, keenly devoted as he is to becoming a romantic crooner in the vein of Harry Connick, Michael Buble and famous balladeer Jose Mari Chan.

Poon describes his music as "Fresh, Old-school," which is only apt as his repertoire is filled with highly-energized, inspiring takes of the standards famously rendered by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Rod Stewart among others. Born and raised in the Philippines, Poon inherited his parents' special skills. He got his musical skills from his mom who is a big star in Taiwan and his culinary expertise from his Cantonese dad who is a restauranteur/chef based in Hongkong.

Poon is an accomplished musician whose deep knowledge of music allows him to delve into a wide variety of other musical genres. It is as such, that during his well-attended concerts, aside from his usual set of standards, Poon would also often treat his audience with unexpected, inimitable covers of many contemporary hits as well.

As exciting and prolific as he is, Poon together with his skilled four piece jazz band, have proudly graced many lounges and bars across the metro including a regular stint at Eastwood Central Plaza. They are also consistently invited to perform in various weddings, corporate shows and parties.

Besides being adept in re-interpreting well-loved tunes of old, Poon also sings and writes his own music, one of which dubbed, "Lalala" was sung by Regine Velasquez and Piolo Pascual for the soundtrack of their movie "Paano Kita Iibigin."

Poon is definitely a star to watch in the local scene. Even before he is formally launched as a major solo artist, Poon made a strong impact among the Filipino audience with his superb artistry when he was picked from the so many crooners in the industry to serenade the top eight finalists in the recently concluded Miss Earth International 2007 at the UP Film Theater.

The many accomplishments Poon achieved in so short a time has no doubt paved the way for him being signed up by Cornerstone Talent Management.

He just released his debut CD, "I'll Take Care Of You" distributed by MCA Music, Inc.. He was also invited by ASAP '08 to launch his album on their show and was touted by them to be the newest romantic balladeer.

A successful album launch was held at the Eastwood Central Plaza in Libis, Quezon City last February 1, 2008 where Richard performed an entire set of songs followed by an autograph signing for people who bought the album.

Richard Poon brings back big band sound

Richard Poon’s androgynous voice removes the time warp of the best standard songs and takes them to the present to give them the magic of ageless songs in his I’ll Take Care of YouCD as released by MCA Music. How wonderfully he renders “Fallen” and “My Kind of Girl,” transporting an entire era to where we are now. He picks the best songs of the ’50s and ’70s, such as “Moon River,” “Somewhere (There’s A Place for Us)” and “More” and make them his own through the incomparable artistry of his unique voice.

Their arrangements are clearly retro but with a big band feel. Richard shows how easy to do it with great success. He brings finger-flicking in “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” and wordplay in and he completes the style’s transposition. He applies the style in the bouncy interpretation of Ray Valera’s “Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko” and shows its adaptability even in a vernacular song. He does the same with “Naaalala,” Richard own composition.

Richard, however, is far from a safe artist. He begins and ends this superior song collection with relatively unknown numbers, specifically, “I’ll Take Care of You” and “The Last Time.” Richard’s I’ll Take Care of You CD is an ambitious project, which triumphs at all levels, from the CD cover to the quality of recording. This work of art can only come from a true artist. Richard’s CD reaps for itself the merit of being one of the best releases even at this early part of the year.

    Richard Poon changes his act

    Yugel Losorata

Everybody’s looking for the next big music genre and it is natural for some musicians to suddenly make the shift to whatever the market demands.

Crooner Richard Poon, however, didn’t take the change from pop to standards to jump on the big band wagon. He did it because he felt the music was worth devoting his time on.

It only means that Poon is not another contrived act hoping to cash in on a certain trend. He has changed his suit and is making use of the old-style microphone because he has fallen in love with the kind of songs he is singing now.

"Standards are so good it changed my bias. Pop music becomes stale in the long run. Not the standards, which grow into you. The more you listen to it, mas kumakapit," he explained while facing the press during the recent launch of his album at Eastwood Central Plaza .

A former member of the acoustic pop act U-Turn, Richard Poon has gone solo and is getting popular around the scene as a worthy crooner. His album, "I’ll Take Care of You," is the defining work reflecting his personal discovery for standard music.

Describing his music as "fresh old school," Poon is clearly trying to send a message that such a change should be done only when your heart desires it. That is why the transition seemed smooth. Even his separation from his former bandmates was described as "a natural slide."

He has some good words for his past band experience: "That stint prepared me emotionally and it’s an advantage on my part since I was performing for four years with U-turn. Connecting with the crowd has become an easy task for me.

"One day I realized I just felt like moving on. And then I got the opportunity to sing the standards and I came to a decision that it was the direction I needed to take."

He hasn’t completely abandoned pop music. His 13-track album features big band renditions of "Way Back Into Love" (originally part of "Music and Lyrics" soundtrack) and "Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko," along with his original compositions "Goodbye" and "Naaalala."

Other notable tracks are "Moon river," "Somewhere" and "Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off."

As a romantic crooner, Poon is dead-set on reaching the level of excellence attained by his idols Harry Connick, Michael Buble, and Jose Mari Chan.

"It feels good that Jose Mari Chan is very supportive of me. I hope audiences will find the standard, modern pop mix in my album a good twist," he said.

He humbly admits he has a way to go as far as his understanding of standard music is concerned, Yet the switch has been accepted by fans – they now realize he’s not jumping on a fad. When he sings the standards with his four-piece jazz band, it’s clear his heart is in this kind of music.

Live And Loud, MCA Presents The Full Spectrum Of Music
    By MCA Music Inc.
    March 18, 2008

From OPM Soul to good old fashioned rock n’ roll, MCA Music embraces the full music spectrum. From the most entertaining solo artists to the most innovative and intense bands, MCA provides the most exciting live acts.

Julianne, dubbed as OPM's soulchild, is taking the music scene by storm with her different brand of music. A talented singer, a great composer and a gifted guitarist Julianne, doesn't want to put any tag to her music. "My music is me", says the beautiful singer. "It's something that evolves the same way I'm growing as a person."With this said, the Original Pilipino Music arena can only expect the best from this young singer”. Grateful is available in all record stores.

Chicosci, one of the more unique bands of recent years known for their innovative, atmospheric, and intense music released and launched their self-titled fourth album. Having been in the studio for more than a year, the band boasts it as being their best work to date. A self-produced effort, the band again attempts to give listeners something new to look forward to. Focusing more on catchier melodies and earnest lyrics, the new album redefines the bands already distinct sound with MTV-generation pop sensibilities. With the new record, the band hopes to further expand its fanbase and touch those who might share the bands experiences. Chicosci is available in all record stores.

Miguel Escueta established himself in Acoustic Break competition in 2003 where he won first runner-up. His recording “Let It Be” for the singing tilt’s official compilation album garnered a nomination for Best New Male Recording Artist in the prestigious 2005 Awit Awards. As evidenced by “Falling Away,” his album showcases easy listening pop/rock music akin to the likes of Dashboard Confessional, James Morrison and Lifehouse, among others. But the element in his music that Miguel is proudest of is the lyrics, for he believes that lyrics are the heart of every song and everything else evolves from that. I Am M.E. is available in all record stores.

Cambio, is a band composed of musical heavyweights Raimund Marasigan and Buddy Zabala of E-heads, Kris Gorra-Dancel of Fatal Posporos, Diego Mapa of Pedicab and Ebe Dancel of Sugarfree. Cambio’s exciting mix of talent and musicality makes it no surprise that their music stands-out in today’s market and are bound to tickle any musical fans fancy. The group has also performed on some top-caliber shows and events ranging from the MTV Music Summit, Fete dela Musique, SMB Oktoberfest, the NU107 Rock Awards and the first Rockestra. CambioMatic is available in all records stores.

Richard Poon who is fast making his mark even as he continues to steer away from doing usual pop fare, keenly devoted as he is to becoming a romantic crooner in the vein of Harry Connick, Michael Bubble and famous balladeer Jose Mari Chan. Ang pag-angat ni Richard Poon

    By: Leo M. Bukas

I'll Take Care of You.

    Richard Poon at Robinsons Place

Richard Poon claims his place in the OPM arena via the debut album, I’ll Take Care Of You, produced by Cornerstone Talent Management Center and released under MCA Music Inc.

It takes the artist’s singing career to a different route. While others would go for pop music to attain stardom, Richard chose to collect 15 tracks of classics in his freshman effort.

Poon says he wants to broaden his horizon as a performer. He has already established himself as an acoustic singer/guitarist among the young. This time, he would like to reach out to the mature audience.

“I wanted to record songs that were popular before my time as they’d appeal to the older generation. It’s a challenge for me to do justice to the musical masterpieces of songwriters and performers who are now considered legends in the music industry,” he adds.

I’ll Take Care Of You is a musical journey back into the past. Each song brings to life beautiful memories of the era from which it has been taken! There are also selections in the album that revives the Manila Sound era: Rey Valera’s “Naaalala’ and “Kahit Maputi Ang Buhok Ko.”

In its entirety, romance fills the air as you go through each cut that would convince listeners that Richard Poon is truly “The Gentleman Of Croon.” I’ll Take Care Of You was launched before an SRO crowd at Eastwood Central Libis where Poon is a regular attraction every week.

He embarks on a mall tour to serenade his fans with special tracks from his album tomorrow at Robinsons Place in Manila and on Saturday, April 12 in Robinsons Metro East. He will sign autographs on authentic copies of his maiden album bought by fans during the mall shows.

Richard Poon is a singing cook

Before turning a classics balladeer, Richard Poon used to dice zucchinis and flip pans at his father's well-known Mr. Poon Restaurant. Now that he makes music lover swoon with his enthralling voice, he has not exactly given up cooking. He designed the menu of Little Poon, the quick service version of Mr. Poon which he co-owns with talent manager Eric Raymundo. He takes time out from his busy schedule to cook there. But singing is his core undertaking now. His maiden solo album "I'll Take Care of You" is always in the top 10 in sales at music stores. Besides weekly appearances in "ASAP '08," he's doing his first major solo concert on May 1 and 2 at the Music Museum as produced by ASAP Live. Richard's now in the US doing a series of shows with Sam Milby.

    Re: Richard Poon
